sakumichael-local-runner.hatenablog.com

  • Youtube

Hello everyone!

As I mentioned at the end of my last article, I injured my foot in the middle of point practice. As I mentioned at the end of my last article, I injured my foot during a point practice, and what I thought was a sprain turned out to be a cracked bone.

sakumichael-local-runner.hatenablog.com

It's been almost four weeks since I got injured on October 20, and I'm writing this blog on November 14. It's going to take me a good two to three months to fully recover.

So, I had the following schedule as my race plan, but it has become quite difficult for me to achieve a sub-three, let alone break my own record this season.

  • 2021/11/3 Gunma MarathonDNS
  • 2021/11/28 Mt. Fuji MarathonDNS
  • 2022/2/6 Beppu Oita Mainichi Marathon → Selected, but cancelled
  • 2022/2/27 Osaka Marathon (Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon) → Selected, but cancelled
  • 2022/3/6 Tokyo Marathon → To be entered (depending on Corona)

I was planning to aim for sub-three at this time if I won another marathon, but I decided not to enter this race, which is the pinnacle of citizen runners, as I have no way to resume running. As for the Osaka and Tokyo Marathons, even if I had fully recovered from my injury, it would be impossible for me to prepare my body to run a full marathon two weeks in a row, so I decided to focus on the Tokyo Marathon. Since there was no guarantee that I would be able to win the Betsudai or Osaka marathons, I had to give up.

From here on, I will write about my thoughts and the changes in my life after my injury for future reference.

Changes in Emotion after Injury

I think there are four main categories: 1) immediately after the injury, 2) the day after the injury to within a week, 3) one week to three weeks after the injury, and 4) from three weeks after the injury. The condition of the injury and the surrounding environment. I was greatly affected by each of them. Although I have recently stabilized, I think I was quite emotionally unstable.

(1) Immediately after the injury

To give you a brief description of the situation when I got injured, I was doing interval training on the track at Teahouse Park, specifically 10 x 1000m, when I ran off the inside of the track, got my foot caught on a step, and twisted it. And it was the first run.

  • The moment I twisted my leg → Oh no, I'm a pacer for the second run, and I'm going to cause trouble for everyone!
  • 1 minute later → I can't run anymore today, it's cold and I don't have a jacket, how am I going to get home?
  • 5 minutes later → I'll just have to take a cab home, it's hopeless to run next week's Gunma Marathon like this!
  • 1 hour later → (Arriving home) I don't know when I'll be able to start running, but this kind of hardship is part of the marathon, so let's stay positive!

Despair came over me as soon as I got injured, but I eventually switched to positive thinking and faced the next day.

(2) From the day after the injury to one week

The next day, I went to a nearby osteopath. Based on the degree of swelling, it was determined that there was nothing wrong with the bone. I started treatment based on the assumption that it was probably ligament damage. Specifically, the treatment consisted of "immobilizing the entire ankle" and "cooling it down. At the same time, I scoured Youtube and the Internet for information on how to heal a sprain quickly. At this point, I don't think the bone is broken, so I'm planning to heal it in a week, and then adjust for the Gunma Marathon in another week. I'm a swaggerer.

  • Three days have passed since the injury → The pain is getting better little by little, but I don't think I'll be completely healed in a week.
  • Another 3 to 4 days pass → Is it really getting better? (It's getting harder and harder to see my running buddies around me practicing on social media and the Garmin app)

Before the injury, I used to spend 30-40 hours a month on running, and now I have too much time on my hands (I bought about 10 books that I hadn't wanted to read before as a countermeasure), and I gradually start to feel emotionally unstable.

(3) One week to three weeks after the injury

The pain was still not subsiding, and I decided to DNS the Gunma Marathon on November 3rd. At the same time, I went to an orthopedic clinic a little far from my house, where I had an x-ray done, and it turned out to be a fracture, not ligament damage. As a result, my DNS for the Fujiyama Marathon on November 28 was confirmed. The psychological change from this point on was so severe that I started drinking alcohol at home again, which I had stopped doing for a while. It was also the time when the marathon season had just started, so when I turned on Youtube, there were race videos everywhere. I wish I didn't have to watch those videos, but when I saw people running, I was so jealous of them that I fell into a spiral of emotional instability that led me to drink more alcohol.

(4) Three weeks after injury - Present

Recently, my psychological state has finally calmed down. Since I don't have to spend time on training, I can truly think that I can spend my time on other things. The pain is gradually receding, and I can now think seriously about what to do after the injury is healed. It took me less than a month to get to this point.

Changes in my life after the injury

Again, before my injury, I was spending about 30-40 hours a month on running, which translates to about 1-1.5 hours a day. As I mentioned above, I've become quite emotionally unstable, and I'm aware that I've wasted a lot of time. Here are some things that have changed

  • My ability to concentrate on anything has decreased.
  • I go out less often.
  • Spent more time watching Youtube
  • Increased the frequency of my strength training

When I look at it this way, I think I can give reasons for each of them. The biggest one is the loss of concentration. I realized that I had to increase the productivity of my life in general, including work, in order to find time to run.

Whatever it is, I'm sure I'll gain weight if I keep up this lifestyle. Once again, I am reminded of the magnitude of what I can gain from running. This includes not only the quality of life, but also the impact on the body. Being able to run is wonderful. I truly believe that.

I'm not sure when I'll be able to start running again. However, since the only race I can run this season is the Tokyo Marathon, I want to build up my body with the short preparation time I have. Imagining that I can't suddenly increase the intensity of my running, I'd like to do some strength training and spin biking to keep my body moving until I resume running.

See you soon.
